Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. Fearing stress, her parents didn't want to see performing before turning age 18. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved to the university from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness brought Perry home to California, where theater jobs were available. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. That same year she appeared as a younger model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. She was cast in the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
